Date : 10 November 2025
Venue : Dakar, Senegal
The
National Agency of Statistics and Demography (ANSD) and the Ministry of Health
and Social Action of Senegal have released the 2023 Global Adult Tobacco Survey
(GATS) results, providing key data on tobacco use among adults aged 15 and
older. The findings show that 4.4% of adults are current tobacco users, with
4.1% being smokers, while newer products such as electronic cigarettes (0.4%)
and heated tobacco (0.2%) have also emerged in the market. This standardized
survey assists Senegal in evaluating its demand reduction measures and
fulfilling its obligations to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control
(FCTC).
Public
awareness remains high, with 87.2% of adults recognizing that smoking causes
serious disease and 93.4% supporting increased tobacco taxes. However,
significant challenges persist regarding secondhand smoke, with exposure
reaching 21.1% in workplaces. Notably, 62.5% of current smokers are considering
quitting, a trend that provides a strong foundation for strengthening future
national tobacco control programs.
