Date : 07 May 2026
Venue : Dakar, Senegal
The National
Agency of Statistics and Demography (ANSD) and the Ministry of Health and
Social Action (MSAS) of Senegal have released the full report for the 2023
Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), providing updated and comprehensive data on
tobacco use among adults aged 15 and older. The
final results confirm that 4.4% of adults are current tobacco users, with 4.1%
being smokers. The report also details the
emergence of newer products, such as electronic cigarettes (0.4%) and heated
tobacco (0.2%), which have entered the local market. This comprehensive
report serves as a base for Senegal to assess the effectiveness of its demand
reduction strategies and monitor progress in meeting its international
commitments under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).
Public awareness remains a cornerstone of
national efforts, with 87.2% of adults recognizing that smoking causes serious
disease. Support for fiscal measures is nearly universal, with 93.4% of adults
favoring increased tobacco taxes. However, significant challenges persist
regarding secondhand smoke as exposure reached 21.1% in enclosed workplaces. Notably,
62.5% of current smokers are considering or intending to quit, and 37.5% of
those who saw health warnings on cigarette packs considered quitting as a
result. The publication of this report provides a formal framework for
enhancing future national tobacco control interventions and strengthening the
associated public health infrastructure.
