Emergency Medical Records Rollout Transforms Patient Care and Data Management in Uganda

Date : 13 June 2025
Venue : Kampala, Uganda
For decades, Uganda’s health facilities operated with paper files stacked in corners, handwritten registers, and overloaded storage rooms. Medical records were often misplaced or incomplete, and decision-making was slowed down by unreliable data. Health workers filled out forms by hand, sometimes several times for the same patient, and vital information could be lost in the paperwork.

In 2018, a new journey began—one that would quietly but steadily transform Uganda’s healthcare system. The Ministry of Health introduced Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) to address the longstanding challenges of paper-based reporting.
